I absolutely love beautiful, white-sand beaches, so Holmes Beach was a must-see on our trip. While we were there, we appreciated the laid-back atmosphere and welcoming community. We had our three pups with us, and they were causing quite a stir in this new-to-us area.

The quaint cottages, locally-owned shops, and fresh seafood restaurants in Anna Maria Island exude that old Florida charm that I’m so in love with. The city of Anna Maria is more quiet while Holmes Beach strikes a perfect balance between relaxation and activity.
While the city of Anna Maria offers more boutique shops and art galleries, Holmes Beach offers a range of restaurants, shopping centers, and several parks, making it an ideal spot for a family destination. It has that perfect combination of relaxation and convenience, with easy access to everything you might need.
If you want to explore the area at your own pace, you can rent bikes, golf carts, or scooters, but Holmes Beach also has a free trolley service that runs the length of the entire island. Since this was just a quick stop on our Key West trip, my son and I just took turns taking a quick walk on the beach while the other waited at the truck with the pups. Unfortunately, Holmes Beach is not pet-friendly.

The peak season for this area is usually from December to April, as guests are escaping the winter chill up North. So, make sure to book early and secure your spot, especially if you’re planning to visit during spring break or any major holidays. And if you really want a memorable experience, book a spot with beach access for stunning sunset views.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Beach Day
Remember that Holmes Beach is home to protected sea turtle nesting sites, please don’t disturb their habitats. Simple things like picking up after yourself and avoiding plastic straws and bottles will help keep this area beautiful and safe for the wildlife. Please leave the beach as you found it.
You can rinse off after a day in the sand at the conveniently located public restrooms and showers at several beach access points. There are no lifeguards at Holmes Beach, so swimming is at your own risk. Be mindful of rip currents and avoid swimming in rough waters. If you find yourself in a rip current, don’t panic; swim parallel to the shore until you’re away from the current. Adhere to posted safety flags, and be sure to keep an eye on children. It takes a village, right?
While alcohol is allowed at Holmes Beach, it must be in non-glass containers, and you should always check the local regulations as they sometimes change. Again, please pick up after yourself. Don’t discard your trash in the Gulf.
Lastly, bring sunscreen, water, and shade. Florida is hot and humid.
Holmes Beach Climate and Wildlife
Holmes Beach accommodations are ideal year-round because of the warm water temperatures which range from 65°F in winter time to 85°F in summertime. From April through October, the weather is warm and sunny which is perfect for swimming and water sports. It’s a bit cooler from November through March, which is great weather for shell collecting and long walks on the beach.
No matter the weather, the powdery white sand and turquoise waters make Holmes Beach a picture-perfect getaway. The sunsets are truly magical on this side of Florida, so don’t miss out on an evening stroll or an evening dinner on the beach.
Dolphins, manatees, and a variety of shorebirds are seen frequently, but keep an eye out for those sea turtles as they nest from May to October, which is the ideal time for swimming. Boating and fishing are great year-round in this area. Boating is best from April to November, while the peak fishing seasons are March through June and September through November.
