The first day of our first Alabama road trip was all about getting to Dothan with a few cool stops along the way. The second day of our Alabama Road Trip was part explore Enterprise, Alabama and part business.

Dusty’s mom passed away a year before this trip and Dusty made a promise to her that we were prepared to keep. The promise was to ensure that all of the family’s unmarked graves would get marked. Dusty had prepared homemade headstones for the ancestors that had gone so long without. This trip was about visiting each of the ancestors and marking their graves, fulfilling the promise.
Most of the family members are resting in Enterprise’s surrounding areas. So on the Roadtrippers app, I planned on driving into Enterprise on the morning of Day Two and exploring some of the iconic and/or historical stops before getting down to business and starting the cemetery hunt.
Stop #6: World’s Smallest City Block
A quick and curious stop to stretch our legs and officially mark our arrival in Enterprise.

The World’s Smallest City Block is exactly what it sounds like—blink and you might miss it—but it’s a fun, low-pressure way to ease into the day before heavier work began.
- Address: 201-209 N College St, Dothan, AL
- Note: Perfect for a quick photo and a smile, not a long linger.
Stop #7: The Depot Museum
We stopped by the local depot museum to get a feel for Enterprise’s railroad roots and early growth.

It offered a quiet pause—part history lesson, part grounding moment—before shifting from exploration to responsibility.
- Address: 106 Railroad St, Enterprise, AL
- Pro Tip: Check hours ahead of time; this is a quick stop if you’re passing through.
Stop #8: The Boll Weevil Monument
Enterprise’s most famous landmark and one of the most uniquely Southern monuments you’ll ever encounter.

Dedicated not to a hero—but to a pest—the Boll Weevil Monument marks the insect that devastated cotton crops and forced the region to diversify, ultimately reshaping the local economy.
- Address: Downtown Square, Enterprise, AL
- Pro Tip: Park nearby and walk the surrounding streets—you’ll spot plenty of boll weevil-themed surprises.
Stop #9: The Little Red Schoolhouse
A brief stop at a charming reminder of early education in the area. Simple, quiet, and easy to overlook, this little schoolhouse felt like a pause button—history without noise.

- Address: 106 Railroad St, Enterprise, AL (behind the Depot)
- Note: This is a visual stop rather than an immersive one.
Stop #10: Helms Historic Plaque
This stop was personal. The Helms family were pioneers of Ozark, Alabama—and Dusty’s ancestors. Seeing her family name etched into a historic marker made this more than just a roadside pause. It was a tangible connection to the people we were here to honor.
- Address: 4815 Alabama Highway 51, New Brockton, AL
- Note: If your family history is tied to a place, local markers can be unexpectedly powerful.
Stop #11: Panther Creek Baptist Church
This was one of the more emotionally charged stops of the day. Dusty had visited this cemetery before with her mom, but this time she didn’t recognize it—and couldn’t immediately find certain ancestors. Panic set in fast. We left, regrouped, and returned once she had calmed down. When we did, the missing graves were right where she had left them years earlier.

Dusty jokes that her memory is “dust on a handrail”—sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s gone—but the relief of finding those markers made the detour worth it.
- Address: 711 Bailey Rd, Slocomb, AL
- Pro Tip: If you’re doing family research, give yourself grace—and time.
Stop #12: Tabernacle Methodist
A brief stop that served less as exploration and more as recovery. We used the quiet time here to regroup, double-check information, and search for missing burial records from the previous stop.
- Address: 5099 Alabama Highway 123, Hartford, AL
- Pro Tip: Not every stop needs a story—some exist to help you steady yourself.
Stop #13: Bethlehem Church Cemetery
We’ve written about this site before, so rather than repeat the full story, this visit focused on checking in—both emotionally and logistically.

The Bethelem Church itself has been closed for many years, though the grounds remain mostly maintained. It’s old enough that the main building lacks indoor plumbing, with restrooms housed in a smaller outbuilding nearby.
- Address: 2616 County Road 70, Slocomb, AL
- Pro Tip: This is a quiet place—approach respectfully and don’t rush it.
Stop #14: Dothan Downtown Tour
We wrapped up the day with a ghost tour through downtown Dothan. While this ended up being our least favorite ghost tour we’ve done, it still gave us a loose framework of local lore and places worth researching later.
No regrets—we enjoy these tours as jumping-off points, even when they don’t quite deliver.
- Pro Tip: Use ghost tours as introductions, not conclusions.

Road Notes and Lessons Learned
- Don’t blindly trust Dusty’s memory (said with much love).
- Slow down on dirt roads – “potholes” are harder to spot than you think.
- Always plan extra time for detours and unexpected discoveries.

Day Two Reflections
By the time we got back to the hotel, we were exhausted. It was late at night and we had finished a full day of wandering, working, and walking. We were fulfilled and determined. We had another full day planned for the next day, there was some unfinished business in other cemeteries.
It was an emotionally exhausting day—but we completed most of what we came to do. With unfinished business waiting in other cemeteries, we cleaned up, turned in early, and prepared to do it all again the next day.
Ready to Plan Your Own Route?
- Download Roadtrippers (or grab a paper map if you’re old school like me).
- Pin these five stops—or discover your own.
- Don’t rush. The best parts of the journey live between the destinations.
With some planning, this drive becomes less of a long haul and more of a Southern adventure packed with small-town stories, river views, and local legends. Happy travels!
