A three-day North Florida journey built from one simple errand, a lot of extra time, and more detours than expected
Some road trips begin with a carefully chosen destination.
Others begin because somebody needs paperwork signed.
This was definitely the second kind.
What started as a simple weekend trip to Lake City, Florida, quickly turned into three days of wandering through North Florida—exploring state parks, historic sites, forgotten ruins, cemeteries, museums, springs, old homes, and more than a few places we hadn’t originally planned to visit at all.
And somehow, those unexpected additions became some of the best parts of the trip.

The original purpose of this trip was simple: Dusty needed to visit her brother in Lake City and get some paperwork signed.
Everything else?
That was us making the most of the drive.
🚗 Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day One: Six Extra Hours
Our original plan was to leave after work.
Instead, we both unexpectedly ended up with the entire day off.
So naturally, we left about six hours early and immediately destroyed the itinerary—in the best possible way.
A wrong turn led us into a beautiful historic cemetery before we even reached our first planned stop. From there, the day unfolded through wildlife sightings, state parks, an abandoned sulfur bathhouse, historic buildings, Florida’s largest whitewater rapids, a waterfall, an old church and cemetery, and a giant bat house.
We also met a local named Teddy Bear, discovered that sore feet can negotiate changes to an itinerary remarkably well, and ended the night dealing with a hotel misunderstanding that was fortunately solved without a $250 smoking fine.
By bedtime, we had already completed most of what we’d planned for Saturday.
So we did the only logical thing.
We added more places.

Day Two: Closed Doors and Hidden Ruins
Day Two started with sore feet, emergency shoe inserts, and a very necessary Waffle House breakfast.
Then we were off again.
We explored trails at Suwannee River State Park, visited a tiny historic cemetery, spotted wildlife, searched for ruins in completely the wrong place, and began what quickly became a recurring theme of the day:
Museums that were supposed to be open…
but weren’t.
Thankfully, one historic train depot museum more than redeemed the others.
There was also an attempted historic brick acquisition, what briefly appeared to be a police sting operation, the actual paperwork appointment that caused this entire road trip, and an unplanned drive to another state park where a ranger surprised us with two collectible pins.
Best of all, local directions finally helped us find the ruins we’d been searching for earlier.
Sometimes getting lost is just the first half of finding something.

Day Three: One More Detour
By Sunday morning, we had once again managed to run out of planned things to do.
Our main destination didn’t open until noon, so we started looking for ways to fill the morning.
That turned into a search for the City of Hawkinsville steamboat site, quick visits to Fanning Springs and the former location of Fort Fanning, and another completely unplanned addition to the trip.
Dudley Farm Historic State Park turned out to be one of my favorite stops of the weekend.
From there, we finished the journey at the Historic Haile Homestead, where generations of writing preserved on the home’s famous “Talking Walls” offered one final reminder that history isn’t just dates and buildings.
It’s people leaving pieces of themselves behind.
By the time we returned to the truck, Dusty had reached her final verdict on the weekend:
“Best Valentine’s Day gift EVER!”
Not bad for a trip that started with paperwork.

🌅 Reflections from the Road
This trip didn’t unfold the way we planned.
And that’s exactly why it worked.
Leaving earlier than expected gave us room to wander.
Closed museums sent us somewhere else.
Wrong directions became discoveries.
Locals helped us find places we would have otherwise missed.
Stops that weren’t on the original itinerary became some of our favorites.
And somewhere between the historic sites, state parks, sore feet, questionable decisions, and late-night journaling at a picnic table outside the hotel, this became the trip Dusty still called her favorite.
That’s what I remember most.
Not one individual destination.
The feeling of the weekend.
We had somewhere we needed to be, but plenty of freedom in between.
And sometimes that’s the perfect road trip formula.
🧭 Planning Your Own North Florida Road Trip?
If you’re planning a similar trip through Lake City, White Springs, Live Oak, or the surrounding parts of North Florida, a few lessons from our weekend might help:
- Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. Extra hours have a funny way of becoming extra adventures.
- Check museum hours—but also accept that “open” occasionally appears to be more of a suggestion.
- Listen to locals. Some of our best discoveries came from conversations we never planned to have.
- Don’t overlook Florida’s state parks. North Florida offers far more variety than many travelers expect.
- Leave space for detours. The places you add at the last minute may become the ones you remember most.
And maybe keep a pair of good shoe inserts handy.
Trust me on that one.
Three days.
One necessary errand.
And a North Florida road trip that grew far beyond anything we originally planned.
From wild horses and whitewater rapids to hidden ruins, historic farms, and forgotten stories, this journey reminded us that sometimes the best thing you can do with an itinerary…
is leave a little room around the edges.
